My name is Dean and I am a first year resident in Neurology at University Hospitals in Cleveland. I originally am from the Cleveland area, but decided to go as far as possible away from home for college. I graduated from UC San Diego in 2012 with a B.S. in Human Biology and a minor in Political Science. After undergrad, I did neurodevelopment research at The Scripps Research Institute for a year before getting my M.A. in Medical Sciences (MAMS) at Loyola in 2014. I then did Alzheimer research at University of Chicago for a year and taught an Anatomy lab course at Loyola before entering medical school in 2015.
I am currently a PGY-1 resident in Neurology, but I also had a strong additional interest in Ophthalmology during medical school as well. Specifically, my current interests in neurology are in movement disorders and cognitive/behavioral neurology.
At Stritch, I was a member of the Admissions Committee, LUC Mentors, Health Careers Academy (HCA), CHC Phlebotomy Lab, APAMSA, and various physician specialty interest groups. In addition, last year I was on the Executive Boards for the Anesthesiology Interest Group and Oncology Interest Group. Couple summers ago, I conducted clinical research on Parkinson Disease and other Movement Disorders at the Cleveland Clinic. Outside of medical school, I like to travel, sail, cook, and am an avid Cleveland sports and University of Michigan sports fan.
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions you have about applying to medical school (MD and DO), personal statements/essays, taking a gap year, research, working with a low GPA and/or MCAT score, or career advice in general. Also, I originally planned on going into research/getting a PhD through undergrad, so if you have any questions about making a career change, what can help you figure out if medicine is the right decision for you, etc., please feel free to contact me!
