Hello and welcome to my LUConnect profile. My name is Tom Murphy and I am a sports medicine physician in Bloomington-Normal, Illinois. I was born and raised in Chicago, attended Loyola for my undergraduate studies graduating with a major in biology with ecology emphasis and minor in communications in 2010, and completed my medical degree at the Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2014.
In 2017 I completed family medicine residency at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago and in 2018 I completed sports medicine fellowship at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. The decision to pursue medicine was one that came a little bit later in my college career, and I did not make the definite decision until shortly before my junior year at Loyola. Despite all of this, I was still able to attend my first choice medical school without having to take a gap year, an opportunity for which I am very grateful. I know that there is a large pre-med population at Loyola, and I would be happy to help with any step of the process. I think I could be especially helpful in discussing the planning of your four years at Loyola for pre-meds and how to not make some of the mistakes I did.
The MCAT has changed a lot since I took it, but I can always weigh in on preparation and scheduling. I would be happy to discuss any part of the medical school application process, from preliminary apps, to supplementals, to your personal statement, to interviews, to choosing which school is right for you. One caveat I will add is that, while I am always happy to do my best to make suggestions about people or organizations to reach out to regarding things like networking or resume and application building, my ability to provide direct introductions or opportunities is limited.
For non medically inclined students, I was also very involved in several on-campus organizations as well as student leadership, and would be happy to help with any part of your journey for which you think I may be useful. As a human being, I would also be happy to talk about life in general, although I am not sure how much insight I can offer. I apologize in advance for my busy schedule that we may need to work around, but if you think that I can help you in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out!
