LUC Mentors (Medical Student)

Mentoring, Advising, Shadowing, Panel

Hey everyone! My name is Joe Benert. I'm a third year medical student originally from Minnesota. I majored in biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I spent a year working at Epic (EMR software) in the Madison area before entering medical school.

I know the process of applying to medical school is a challenging one. I didn't have a lot of guidance during my undergraduate years, and was rejected my first time applying. Between having to apply a second time and serving on the admissions committee (reviewing applications and giving tours), I've learned many things I wish I had known when I first started applying.

I have been married more than a year to my wonderful wife. She helps me get away from the medical field and stay connected to my other interests. Like every Minnesotan, I was raised in a pair of skates and as such am a huge hockey fan. I also like playing card (cribbage is my favorite) and board games, am a sucker for any dog, and appreciate a good storm.

I don't know yet in what field I want to specialize, but I have interests in emergency medicine and neurology. I also have been significantly involved in the administrative side of medical education, including the reaccrediation process for next year, so if that is an interest area of yours, you can reach out to me.

If you read through all of that, I'm impressed. If you chose to just skip to the end, here's the punch line. Please feel free to contract me about anything. I never had an opportunity like this before applying. Being on the other side, I realize this is a great opportunity so I'm here to hopefully help make the process easier and less stressful for you.
